Original review published on Steve Litchfield's 3-Lib.Regular readers will know by now that I take great delight in finding new
uses for the built-in applications. Derek
Joinson is obviously a bit of a spreadsheet wizard and has devised an
excellent freeware sheet to check UK National Lottery
cards. It's downloadable here as UKLotChk102.zip.
Casual players have enough trouble scanning for possible wins each week, but
people manning office syndicates face a numerical nightmare doing the same job.
UK Lottery Checker can cope with two tickets, each with up to 7 lines of ball
numbers. The really clever bit is the way Derek's programmed not only win
analysis but also basic error-checking into the cell formulae, making sure that
at least common data entry errors are detected early on. As the numbers are
drawn each week, you just enter them into the cells at the top of the sheet and
then sit back and watch.
OK, so there's no historical database or number analysis, but as the lottery
is random anyway why bother with all the trimmings? This spreadsheet just gets
on and does the business for lottery syndicates up and down the land, quickly
and prettily.
A slap on the back for a great idea that's been elegantly implemented.
