Have you ever wanted to convert Strikes to Cups? Or Wattseconds to Frigories? Or Phots to Apostilbs? No? Neither have I, as it happens. There are very definitely two types of unit conversion program: small and simple ones for everyday use by most people (like Converti) and complex and comprehensive ones for specialist use. Convert5 Pro for the Series 5 is very definitely in the latter category, with many hundreds of units and conversions built into a modular interface. I was looking at v1 (02.1998) and you'll find more details at DevRag's web site.

In fact, the modular concept is really quite clever. There are at least 3 separate modules already available, covering different unit, scale and calculation groups, with the built-in facility to add your own. The main program works out which modules have been installed and then presents them on the main menu. One of the customised modules available is a PAYE reference (UK-specific, but very useful).

If you just need to convert pints to litres, or fahrenheit to centigrade, you'll be dismayed at the sheer number of menu options and dialog choices needed to finish each conversion, but that's very much the flipside of the large quantity of conversion options. Once a conversion has been accomplished, Convert5 Pro forgets all knowledge of it and your units have to be selected from scratch again, which is a shame. At least the authors have put in a basic 'again' feature into the calculation results screen, which goes some way to lessening the inconvenience.

The overall package is professionally finished, with excellent help files and active web and email support and would be a prime contender for companies wishing to set up mobile staff with a customised units conversion suite.

With very few new releases of software, no new PDAs, and very little site maintenance happening, should the EPOC Zone be shut down?
Yes, it's pretty much useless...
No, it's one of the last Psion outposts!
