Original review published on Steve Litchfield's 3-Lib.Here's another golf score-card program, although unlike the commercially
available programs, this one's freeware. I got v1.11
for the Series 3 and v5.0 for the Series 5 from
Keith Ross-Jones's
web site.
10/10 for prettiness, a nicely designed screen despite the large amount of
information laid out on it. As you'll guess from the screen-shots, Golf
Assistant simply takes the place of the traditional paper score-sheet for
up to 4 players. The advantage of using the Psion for this function is that it
can keep track of handicaps and totals as you go along, saving you a lot of
mental and paper arithmetic. Although the Series 5 port works well enough,
support for the touch-screen is limited to just pointing at player slots in the
table - even the menu command icon doesn't work!
Golf Assistant knows about up to 8 different types of competition, which is
6 more than me! It also impresses by being able to save not only course details
but individual matches to disk for later retrieval. The menu structure and
interface is logical and functional without ever aspiring to many of Psion's
style standards. Adequate help screens will speed beginners on their way,
though a certain knowledge of the game is required to make sense of all the
program's functions.
A simple application which will be extremely useful to anyone who plays golf
and doesn't mind taking the Psion along for the ride!
