Original review published on Steve Litchfield's 3-Lib.Ad Bosch, the man responsible for
Contact Edge's renaissance, has been working
independently on this comprehensive motor vehicle logger/analysis tool.
MyCar is available from Ad's web
page, I was reviewing v5.21 for the Series 5.
The original MyCar for the Series 3a/c wasn't amazingly stable, with several
"General Failures" whilst testing it. Even the author seemed slightly
paranoid about the program's robustness, as there used to be a menu card called
"Tricky" with an option labelled "Dangerous"! 8-)) Anyway,
here we are with the completely revamped Series 5 version and it seems a lot
better in this respect, with everything doing what it ought, so hats off to the
author.
The interface has also been improved drastically from the 3a/c version, with
good use of the touch-screen for toggling graph types and transaction displays,
plus a useful toolbar. All available functions are now available as proper menu
options, allowing things like entering new fuel or fixed-cost transactions, or
calling up one of MyCar's many informational screens with pretty graphics and
reports. These latter scroll smoothly off screen after use, which although
pretty to watch get a trifle annoying after a while. You can view all the
different cost categories by month or year or in graphical bar-chart form.
The program is now freeware and handles mutiple
vehicles elegantly through the Series 5 system screen's document interface. The
supplied help screens are adequate, though I would have liked to see more
detail and explanations as it all seems a bit sparse. One anomaly I found odd
was not being able to edit the last-entered transaction, with the only
workaround being to delete it and re-enter!
A very useful and attractive program for all those who perpetually worry
about how much their precious vehicle is costing them.
The 3a/3c version is still available on Ad's
web page.
