Original review published on Steve Litchfield's 3-Lib.Keeping track of what time is spent on which tasks is tricky enough as it is
without having to account for it in enough detail to bill someone else for it.
Many people, myself included, have used combinations of spreadsheets to perform
this task in the past, but Thomas Nemec's TimeLog really does provide a
more sophisticated alternative. Being shareware, it's downloadable from his
web site. I've been looking at
v3.00f.
As you'd expect, the core of the program revolves around activities that you
do on behalf of different clients. Databases of categories (clients/companies
etc) and activity types (each with a rate per hour or flat rate) mean that you
rarely have to input the same information twice. In real-world use, once you've
set up your oft-most used clients and activities, TimeLog makes the tracking of
jobs very easy. There's no real-time timer(s) and entering of time information
is up to you, but this isn't a weakness in my eyes as my task recording is
almost always done when I think of it later in the day.
The clever bit comes at invoice time. Simply select the category/client and
date range required, and up pops the invoice amount. I assume that the invoice
printout would include all activity details as well but couldn't test this as
Thomas has unhelpfully restricted printing to registered users. 8-(
TimeLog's interface is fairly well done, with professionally-done draggable
columns; the buttons and panels at the bottom of the screen also 'did the right
thing', giving a multitude of filtering functions. I was slightly disappointed
that the column title buttons did nothing and would have expected to toggle the
sort order in that column at the very least. The small square icon to the left
of the toolbar title acts as a very handy launch button for the shown popup
menu, giving quick access to each of the program's areas.
A good set of help screens complete a very useful application for anyone
wishing to record their time useage on a Psion 5.
