Original review published on Steve Litchfield's 3-Lib.Must be something about these french programmers: this is the second
Paris metro route-finder to be launched! Metro v1.2 is entirely in
french throughout, but considering the program is specifically for Paris I
think that's acceptable. Maybe if enough interest is shown, the author (Gabriel
Dardenne) will consider an english version?
Although I was looking at the Series 5 version, it's really only a port of
the existing S3a/c code, contact
the author for a copy of either!
Metro is shareware, with some restrictions on access to its databases (and
plenty of nag delays 8-( ) until registered. Like most good route planners, one
of the first menu options seen is that for journey details, with route
calculations taking place almost instantaneously. Found routes can then be
depicted on the main map screen. A particularly useful feature is being able to
type in a famous place or monument and receive details including the nearest
metro station.
There are menu options covering surface transport (les autobus, RER etc.)
too, though again much of the functionality seems to be locked away until
registered, which is a shame. Another disappointment is that Metro makes no use
of the Series 5 touch screen whatsoever, though the author promises work on
this in the future.
A nicely implemented city transport utility, let down by some over-zealous
crippling.
